Sprint's Nextel network gets its death date: June 30, 2013

Sprint plans to shut down the Nextel Network next year.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The Nextel chapter of Sprint’s disastrous 2005 merger is just a year away from coming to a close. Let’s call it a mercy killing.

Sprint Nextel said Tuesday that it plans to shut down the Nextel network as early as June 30, 2013. Sprint has long talked about its intention to wind down Nextel, but this is the first time it has offered up a precise end date.

Sprint kicks off iDEN shutdown with vendor selection

Sprint Nextel  said it inked deals with Goodman Networks, Overland Contracting (a construction affiliate of Black & Veatch), Pyramid Network Services and WesTower Communications to decommission the company's iDEN network. Sprint didn't disclose the financial terms of the contracts, but said the vendors would negotiate iDEN lease termination agreements, restore cell site areas and remove Sprint network equipment for re-use or recycling.
